Working-out For Less

Posted on June 24, 2009. Filed under: Exercise, Lifestyle Tips |

We all know times are tough and cutting-back on expenses has become a priority for a lot of people – including me.  Dropping $300/year on a gym membership just isn’t an option with three little mouths to feed, a mortgage, car payments, etc.  SO – here are some helpful tips on how to lower the cost of keeping in shape.

  1. Wheel and deal at the gym. You should never have to pay full price for a gym membership. Let them know that you are interested in joining but want to test it out first and the least you’ll get is a few free passes. Don’t spend more than you need with packaged plans. If you aren’t going to take classes or don’t plan on using the gym’s spa than you shouldn’t have to pay for them. And, if you’re committed, year-long memberships are often cheaper than month-to-month plans.
  2. Partner training. It would be great if we could all afford our own personal trainer.  Instead, try partnering up with a gym buddy or even group up with three or four other people. This way you’ll learn new techniques which can lead to better results.
  3. Consider second-hand equipment. If you have the space and can afford to make the initial investment, you can turn your personal space into your own private gym by buying some used equipment.  Focus only on equipment that you need!!
  4.  Work out for free. Try going for daily walks or jogs; you can even add some variety to your workouts by trying other outdoor activities like ice-skating or swimming. There are also many community centers and churches that offer free workout classes.  So do a little research around your community and see what is being offered.
  5. Look at the big picture. A gym membership can be more than just a luxury; it can help you cut back on other expenses and save money at home! Think of the money you’ll be saving on your cable bill while you’re at the gym or by quitting smoking and dropping the junk food.  You can also use your gym membership to get the rest of your family in shape while spending quality time together.

So, it’s not impossible.  Even taking walks to the park with your kids or just turning up the stereo and having a family dance party is a fun way to get the family together and moving.  Be inventive!!  Treadmills, ellipticals and aerobics tapes can get really boring after a while … so mix it up and try something different!
